Your Step-by-Step FAFSA Gameplan

Navigate the Free Application for Federal Student Aid with confidence. We break down the process into manageable steps so you can maximize your financial aid.

Important FAFSA Dates

Mark these deadlines on your calendar

October 1

FAFSA opens for the upcoming academic year. Early submission increases your chances for aid.

State Deadlines

Each state has different deadlines. Some as early as February. Check your state's priority date.

School Deadlines

Colleges set their own financial aid deadlines. Meet theirs to get institutional aid.

Your FAFSA Gameplan

Follow these steps to complete your FAFSA successfully

1

Gather Your Documents

Before starting, collect:

  • Social Security Number
  • Federal tax returns (yours and parents' if dependent)
  • W-2 forms and income records
  • Bank statements and investment records
2

Create Your FSA ID

Your FSA ID is your legal signature for federal student aid. Both student and one parent (if dependent) need their own FSA ID.

Create FSA ID
3

Complete the FAFSA

Go to studentaid.gov and fill out the form. Use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool to automatically import tax information—it's faster and more accurate.

Pro Tip: Save your progress often. The FAFSA times out after periods of inactivity.

4

List Your Schools

Add up to 10 schools you're applying to. They'll automatically receive your FAFSA information to create your financial aid package.

5

Sign and Submit

Review everything carefully, sign with your FSA ID, and submit. You'll receive a confirmation email with your Student Aid Report (SAR).

6

Review Your SAR

Check your Student Aid Report for errors and make corrections if needed. Your schools will use this to determine your aid.
